Atelier 10 brochure

The unique structure shown here made a great avant-garde looking spread for our brochure. It's actually the skin of a building as told in the story below (The quote in the box is by Goethe: Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do):

Atelier Ten, working closely with structural engineers Atelier One and architect Michael Wilford, developed a unique external skin for the two main theatre spaces in the Singapore Arts Centre.

The skin has a fully-glazed inner layer, shaded on the outside by composite panels arranged on a diamond grid, formed from a family of ten differently-angled and folded sections.

The geometry of the shading elements is varied according to location and orientation, to provide a balance between direct solar gain and daylight. Light is allowed to filter through between the elements, to form Escher-like geometric patterns across the floors and walls as the sun moves around the building during the course of the day

Bespoke computer models were developed to analyse and optimise the thermal and shading performance of the building envelope. The engineers in Singapore used the results of this analysis to develop air conditioning systems for the spaces within.

The inspiration for the design came in part from local and traditional techniques of “veiled” buildings - which combine layers of banana leaves and timber in their construction.
