Atelier 10 brochure

The theme of four is introduced by a quote from a BREEAM study on one of Atelier's 10's driving principles, that of passive stack ventilation (shown in the building on the right):" Four times more energy efficient. Passive stack ventilation at work." The famous Spaceship Earth quote above it is from Buckminster Fuller. Personally I'm a great admirer of Fuller, once regarded as wacky and now suspiciously mainstream. He once said: If success or failure of the planet and of human beings depended on how I am and what I do ...
How would I be? What would I do?

The main body copy reads: When correctly applied, passive stack and natural ventilation techniques have proved to be as much as four times more cost-effective in controlling internal environments than equivalent mechanical systems.* *BREEAM study of naturally-ventilated Inland Revenue Building in Nottingham by Michael Hopkins and Partners

Psv is employed throughout Wood Green Community Mental Health Centre.

Each room connects into a vertical “outlet” chimney, through a series of diaphragm walls which punctuate the facade. Air inlets are positioned at low level to displace heat and CO2 upwards to an outlet grille at high level connected to one of the vertical chimneys, where it then rises by a combination of convection and wind effects to discharge above the roof line. Solar accelerators above the roof line increase the updraft in the stack.

The elimination of services at ceiling level allows the concrete soffits to be exposed on the ground floor providing more thermal mass and maximising the potential for night cooling

Centralised control allows heat to be purged from the building on Summer nights- it can also, in warm weather let the building store surplus “coolth” for the following day .Each individual room has provision for the occupant to exercise personal control over their ventilation system.

Daylighting is excellent, with clerestory glazing in translucent insulating glass allowing diffuse light to enter, with minimal heat loss. Internal lighting is designed to have a relaxed, non-institutional feel. This was achieved by developing special lighting fittings to complement the interior architecture.

Everything in this building was constructed within NHS cost guidelines for Community Health Buildings.
